Male infertility Q & A

Infertility affects about 15% of couples and often the cause of infertility resides with the male partner. Dr. Stein uses the most advanced techniques to diagnose male infertility so it can be successfully treated.

What are the symptoms or potential indicators of male infertility?

The most common symptom is an inability to cause pregnancy after 8-12 consecutive months of having unprotected sex. Other potential symptoms include difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, pain or swelling in the testicles, lack of facial hair, low sperm count or presence of certain diseases or conditions such as varicoceles which are an abnormal collection of veins in the left and possible right scrotum – 50% of varicoceles are bilateral.

What causes male infertility?

Male infertility can be caused by a wide array of factors, including medical conditions, environmental causes and health and lifestyle issues. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Medical and physiological issues such as tumors, problems with ejaculation, undescended testicles, presence of antibodies that attack sperm, hormone imbalance, problems with the sperm ducts, infection, inherited disorders, chromosomal defects and especially varicoceles; a condition that causes reflux of blood into the scrotum
  • Environmental issues such as exposure to chemicals, radiation, or heavy metals
  • Lifestyle factors, such as obesity, alcohol use, drug abuse, smoking, prolonged bicycle riding and stress

Certain medications can also contribute to the male infertility problems, such as overheating the testicles through overuse of hot tubs and saunas, wearing restrictive clothing or using a laptop that rests directly on your legs for long periods of time.

How is male infertility treated?

To identify potential causes of infertility, tests and evaluations like a semen analysis, blood tests and diagnostic imaging like ultrasound may be used. Once an underlying cause has been determined, treatments can include medications, lifestyle changes like losing weight, quitting smoking, or wearing loose clothing and even surgery to correct varicoceles either unilaterally or bilaterally. Many times, no underlying cause can be determined but there are still treatment options that can be used to improve your chances of overcoming infertility. Dr. Stein will be able to discuss all of your options following your evaluation.
