Approximately one in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Dr. Stein their uses state-of-the-art techniques to diagnose prostate cancer and treat it so one can feel confident in their care and outcome.
What are the risk factors associated with prostate cancer?
Certainly older age, a family history of the same, smoking, obesity and a family history of breast cancer or breast cancer genes (BRCA1 or BRCA2) are associated with an increased incidence of prostate cancer.
What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?
Usually, there are no symptoms of prostate cancer unless one has symptoms of very extensive bone disease. The prostatic obstructive symptoms such as difficulty urinating or emptying the bladder, weak or interrupted urinary stream, erectile dysfunction, or blood in the semen are the usual symptoms of benign prostatic obstruction, and not necessarily prostate cancer. Yearly prostate exams and a simple PSA blood test can determine very early cancer of the prostate by detecting a subtle change in the PSA determination. A transrectal outpatient biopsy under local anesthesia may be necessary.
What are the treatments for cancer of the prostate?
Depending upon one's state of prostate cancer and extent of the disease, varied accepted forms of therapy are watchful waiting by following a patient conservatively with digital rectal exams and serum PSA determinations, radical robotic surgery and to remove the entire prostate, or radiation therapy. If extensive disease exists, hormonal therapy and/or chemotherapy may be necessary.
